Putin on drug addiction in Russia

RBC, 06.07.2006, Moscow 18:51:46.The number of drug addicts in Russia rose by 15 times between the late 1980s and 2000, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his Internet conference today. According to various estimates, up to 6m people use drugs today, among them 4m long-term drug addicts. Putin also noted that around 340,000 people are registered as drug users. He added that the number of hidden drug addicts was even bigger. The President also said that a special service for fighting drug addiction had been created in the past three years, with the biggest number of employees in the world: over 40,000 people. The law enforcement system has been redirected towards drug dealers rather than drug users in the recent years. This approach increases its effectiveness, he claims.
